As a Perth web designer, I always want to give my customers the best chance for traffic and rankings of their site.
I am often asked whether it matters if your website is hosted here or overseas such as the US. I explained to a client that I moved a website from a US hosting company to our Australian Dedicated server and without doing anything else the ranking for one keyword moved 2 pages on the search results.
Apart from that, if something happens to your website, do you want to be queuing up to talk to a provider that hosts one million sites in a foreign country on a chat line.
Thats what happens when you try to cut costs and host overseas. They don't care if your business is down or you are losing money.
The other important factor is the speed of the website load. If you host with an overseas company then you can expect that the time from your computer to the server and back will be about 300 ms as opposed to an Australian server with 60-80 ms. thats about 3 times quicker.
Google takes into account the bounce rate on a website. if your website is slow to load due to where it is hosted and your visitors leave (bounce) and that affects your ranking are you saving money.

People who do spammy SEO were a bit worried this week. Google is changing the way search results are being fed and many won’t be very happy about it. Anyway Google has already got rid of the Map Mess at the top of the page. It will be replaced with a normal listing with a link to a map. That link will display the first photo that you load into your local Google map. For most companies that means a logo image. The listings with these colourful logos will definitely get more clicks. They also will send vistors to your Google map page and not your website. Those who have ugly looking Google maps will not get much more business.
