As a Perth web designer, I always want to give my customers the best chance for traffic and rankings of their site.
I am often asked whether it matters if your website is hosted here or overseas such as the US. I explained to a client that I moved a website from a US hosting company to our Australian Dedicated server and without doing anything else the ranking for one keyword moved 2 pages on the search results.
Apart from that, if something happens to your website, do you want to be queuing up to talk to a provider that hosts one million sites in a foreign country on a chat line.
Thats what happens when you try to cut costs and host overseas. They don't care if your business is down or you are losing money.
The other important factor is the speed of the website load. If you host with an overseas company then you can expect that the time from your computer to the server and back will be about 300 ms as opposed to an Australian server with 60-80 ms. thats about 3 times quicker.
Google takes into account the bounce rate on a website. if your website is slow to load due to where it is hosted and your visitors leave (bounce) and that affects your ranking are you saving money.

Should a web designer guarantee to rank a keyword such as web designer perth number one in Google?
I was listening to the radio the other day and I heard a local web design firm claiim that they can guarantee a number 1 rank in google for your chosen keyword.
They also said that if anyone can beat them for number one for the keyword web designer perth they would pay $5,000 and offer them a job.
I was a little surprised about this as he should be aware of Google's stance on this.

People who do spammy SEO were a bit worried this week. I am often asked what a blog is in relation to web design. It is probably the older equivalent of making a diary entry except that it has many more functions. A blog is open to the public whereas a normal diary is private. Blogs allow and encourage comments whereas normal diaries are kept to yourself. The other important feature is that people can subscribe to your blog. This means that whenever you make an entry, people can be notified immediately that there is a post.
I am a big fan of Google apps. If you have had the problems with windows server 2003 and 2008 then you know that if your server goes down you lose emails.
