Sizing and Editing Your Photos

4 Oct 2021 | Uncategorised, Web Design & Development

Taking your photos is one thing, but if you want to make your photos stand out, it all comes down to sizing and editing.

It may seem confusing at first, but getting the sizing of your images is essential to not only ensuring that they are high quality but increasing the load time and functionality of your website. The bigger the file size of an image, the longer it will take to load on your website, which may deter your customers and cause larger problems with the speed of your site, so there are a few image standards that the majority of websites adhere to.

Every website is different, so check with your developer as to their recommended standards for images, but we’ll start you off with the basics.

All digital images are made up of pixels, which is the smallest element in an image. The more pixels are in an image, the higher quality the image is – this is the resolution of the image. As a guideline, we recommend using an image size of 1200 pixels by 800 pixels. This ensures that the image is of a reasonable size and resolution, and is perfect for most images on your website. Banners or other large images on your home page might need to be larger in size, however.

While 1200 by 800-pixel size guarantees a good-sized image and a high resolution, the file size is often too large for a website and can increase the loading time. In order to reduce this, we recommend using an 80% quality. This reduces the quality of the individual pixels, so that it reduces the file size, but not the size (pixels) of the image.5472 x 3648 pixels 100 quality 2.2MB e1630553547120

And this is what the final image looks like, at 1200 by 800 pixels, and at 80% quality.
