Website FAQ’s
How do I resize images?
Resizing an image is a very important step to ensure it looks great on your website without slowing it down. There a few ways you can do this –
Firstly please confirm what image dimensions are required on your site. If you don’t know call us for help. There will be different dimensions in different locations. For example you probably have a main banner on your homepage which will be larger than an image for an internal page. It’s also critical to get your product images sized to the correct shape and size for professional continuity on your site.
Another thing is what size in kb’s your image is. If you uplaod images without compressing them it can make the site run more slowly. What might be a great photo you took on your phone or downloaded from stock images could be 5MB – way too big. Attempt to compress your images to under 400kb for a main image and under 250kb for smaller images or product images.
1. Use an Online Tool
Tools: Canva, Pixlr, Adobe Express, or TinyPNG.
Steps:
- Upload your image to the tool.
- Set the desired dimensions (e.g., 1200px wide for a banner or 800px wide for a blog post image).
- Save the resized image, preferably in JPEG or PNG format for websites.
2. Use an Image Editing Software
Software: Photoshop, GIMP (free), or Preview (on Mac). One we use which we find simple is
Steps:
- Open your image in the software.
- Look for the “Image Size” or “Resize” option.
- Enter the new dimensions while keeping the aspect ratio locked to avoid distortion.
- Save your resized image in web-friendly formats like JPEG (for photos) or PNG (for transparent backgrounds).
3. Resize Directly in WordPress (Optional)
- Go to Media > Library, select your image, and click “Edit Image.”
- Enter the new dimensions in the “Scale Image” section and save.
- (Note: This method isn’t as robust as external tools and may affect image quality.)
Tips for Website Images
- Keep file sizes small: Compress images using tools like TinyPNG or TinyJPG before uploading. Aim for files under 200KB whenever possible.
- Stick to the right dimensions: Use recommended sizes (e.g., 1920x1080px for full-screen banners or 300x300px for thumbnails).
- Maintain aspect ratios: Prevent images from looking stretched or squished.
- By resizing and optimizing your images, you’ll ensure your website looks professional and loads quickly, creating a better user experience!
